RESIDENCY; An Eye-Witness of Freedom Struggle

                         


   India owe its Freedom to the struggles of its Freedom Fighters and many such brave Revolutionists. Many places in India are still standing straight with signs of their struggles and holding some told and untold stories.


                          Lucknow, which is the capital city of Uttar Pradesh, is also glorified with one such place which is named as Residency and is located in the heart of the city.
This place which now only has remains of once a very beautiful residents made by Nawab Saadat Ali Khan for British Resident Officers.


                                                                       

     

                             Entering into the premises of this place, takes me in the time of 1857, when the country was witnessing its first uprising. Lucknow was no behind in the national spirit and the walls of Residency still has its evidence.

                                                                         

 

Residency is famous for the refuge for 3000 British Inhabitants during Revolt of 1857. As the story goes that during this uprising period The British used this place for refuge during the revolt and thus the buildings has to suffer a huge destruction, as Indians were trying to protect their land. This was the obvious consequence. Many people died in the struggle. No doubt there were innocent women and children but arms never differentiate between the guilt and innocence.


                   Walking through the places in there, one can easily feel the pain, death, struggle. Remains of once a very beautiful place tells each and every moments very clearly.
                                                                                 

                                                                     
                          Now, Residency is left with the ruins of Church, Mosque, Post Office, Jail, School, Banquet Hall and Houses. It also has The Cemetery,


were the 2000 dead officials are buried with one most important named as Henry Lawrence,


who was aware aware of his deeds, hence requested for a message craved on his tombstone which goes as
"Here lies Henry Lawrence, who tried to do his duty. May the lord have mercy on his soul."

This place has one museum which describes the story in best of its way and is also well maintained by the authorities.

Entry Ticket: 15 Rupees/- only.
Location: Near Shaheed Smarak, Around half kilometer from Hazratganj, on M.G. Road, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India.
How to Reach: Take auto rickshaw or Rickshaw or taxi, which could easily drop there.
