Lucknow: Nawabi History, Muglai Cuisuine, soulful structures, in short a great vacation.
If you are wondering to
take a break but really couldn't decide between beaches and mountains, we would
suggest ditch both this time and visit a place which has rich history, awesome
food, and beautiful kothis and bungalows to offer, visit Lucknow.
Lucknow is the capital city of Uttar Pradesh, a state with great
political significance. The nearest airport is Amausi which is hardly 25 kms
from the main city and the railway station is Chaarbagh. It is really easy to
reach here by bus, train or flight or even by road, as it is almost 580 kms
from the capital city of India, New Delhi.
Lucknow got his great history due to Nawaabs. The story goes back
to 1722, when first Nawaab, Saadat Khan, a Persian adventurer was appointed a
Nizam of Lucknow. Then the throne passed from one Nawaab to other and finally
came to Asaf-Ud-Dowlah, who should be praised for some gorgeous structures
still standing.
He erected one of the most beautiful and one of a kind monument,
Bada Imambara. It is a perfect example of mixed cultures, vivid architecture
and exactly portrays the lavish lifestyle of the Nawaabs. The diverse
chandeliers from different countries also shows their love and appreciation for
art and various cultures.
Lucknow has not just one such structure, but many, which makes
this city uniquely attractive. Different rulers and officials in charge, made
sure of one thing, to leave behind at least one intense and gorgeous structure,
that people go crazy over. Nawabs were known for their extravagant lifestyles
and so is clearly visible in most of the Kothis, bungalows and other places
they built to live and use for other activities.
One of such place is residency. It has a huge gate at entrance
which was built by Nawaab Saadat Ali khan in honour of British official John
Bailey, also known as bailey gate. In here, still stands the remains of once a
very prosperous and well-maintained buildings and houses of significant people
of that time. Everything was fine for Residency until the revolt of 1857,
rebels attacked, knowing it was the residing place of appointed British
officials. The walls of the place are still marked with the struggles in the
form of holes of bullets and cannon. These marks when seen in person, still
gives the chills and the chaos of the time be felt.
Old Lucknow, has been victorious in keeping those old and stunning
buildings once used by majestic people to live. some are still well maintained,
others might not be that satisfactory still has so much to say to those who
want to listen and feel. But all this could be sensed when visited personally.
Apart from the outstanding structure, Lucknow also offers a
variety of amazing food. Foodies, specially non-vegetarians can try out some of
the Muglai cuisine, which will not only give the momentarily pleasure, but will
also leave an impression. But vegetarians, shouldn't feel bad, as the food here
has so much to offer to them as well.
You can not only eat chicken, but could also wear it, as Lucknow
is also famous for its "Chikenkari." It is a special kind of thread
work, done on all sorts of materials and in different colours. You can not only
choose for yourself but could also buy gifts for apiece family member, a
memento to cherish forever.
The best time to visit is in winters, as summers are hot. Moths
from November to march are best to visit. The view of Gomti river and neighbouring
places are to die for. This city offers peace, on a different level. So, what
are you waiting for, add it in your bucket list and do give a visit. Also, let
us know how you feel about it, once you do.
Happy Travelling.
